OFFICIAL DECLARATION OF WINNERS FOR THE 11th JSFF SHORT FILM SELECTION

BEST SHORT

Walks That Won’t Happen

by Mina Simendić

The film "Walks That Won't Happen" by Mina Simendić is truly interesting in the way it shows how a creative idea, combined with a well-thought-out concept, can turn everyday things into something extraordinary. Through seemingly ordinary scenes, the film reminds us of how important it is to understand the world around us and how deeply we can look at things we often take for granted.

The creative strength of this film lies precisely in its ability to transform simple, everyday activities and explain how these things are much more complex than they appear at first glance. Through intelligently written text and symbolism, Simendić encourages us to delve deeper into understanding, emphasizing how much education we need to truly grasp the complexity of the world.

The film has significant educational value, as it teaches us that perception is often superficial, and that a deeper understanding of the world—gained through education and reflection—is crucial for developing awareness of everything that surrounds us.

BEST JAPANESE SHORT

Kawuso

by Akihito Izuhara

The film that won us over with its striking graphic visuality, subtle but daring narrative. The steady repetitive rhythm like in a marching music, follows two characters  who try to establish communication, the repetian unlike the song it doesn't get its catharsis in sound amplification and accentuation, but in the picture, and it becomes almost anticlimactic, as a warning that the worst disasters do not happen directly, but quietly from the sidelines while we we live our lives routinely.

Award for best Japanese Short Movie goes to Kawuso by Akihito Izuhara.

BEST SERBIAN SHORT

The Future is Bright and Unbearable

by Milena Grujić

This story quietly depicts the brief escape of a young man who is consumed with vague anxiety even as a happy future approaches. There are ironic humor sprinkled throughout the film, and the bittersweet melancholy that permeates the story despite the seemingly happy ending gives it depth. It was an interesting film that allowed me to experience the talent and sensibility of this young Serbian director.
